EV FireSafe continues to research the causes of electric vehicle battery fires globally and has released the latest update of their database which dates back to 2010.
They have concluded that Passenger EV battery fires remain very rare, with just over 313 verified, unverified or under investigation incidents as of 11th July 2022. The number of incidents occurring at charging hubs has dropped slightly to just over 20% of total, and the risk of vapour cloud explosion likewise, down from 10.77% to 5.28%.
2021 was the biggest year so far for incidents, with a total of 96 (verified) globally. At the mid-point of 2022, there are 30 confirmed incidents, so it may result in an overall drop from last year.
EV FireSafe is a research project aiming to identify the risks to emergency responders when attending an electric vehicle (EV) lithium traction battery fire, particularly where that vehicle is connected to energised charging.
