As part of the Western Australian government Climate Policy, the WA Police Force has started the operational trial of zero emissions vehicles.
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 EV and the hydrogen powered Toyota Mirai have been kitted out with WA Police Force branding, lights and sirens. Both vehicles will be used in front line police duties which will test their capability and provide a visible signal to the community of the changing automotive landscape.
Acting Assistant Commissioner Allan Adams said that the acquisition of the cars is part of the Western Australian Climate Policy, which outlines key government actions for a climate-resilient community and the transition to net zero emissions.
“The WA Police Force has initiated research and testing of ‘green’ vehicles that may be suitable for operational policing,” Assistant Commissioner Adams said.
“Toyota and Hyundai have kindly provided vehicles to the WA Police Force for the purpose of a long-term full operational trial.”
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicle will be trialled at State Traffic, Midland, Rockingham, Geraldton and Bunbury Police Stations. The Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle will be trialled in the Fremantle District.
At the end of the trial the vehicle performance and suitability will be reviewed for long term operational requirements.
