I was in Bowral one Saturday talking about electric vehicles at a Greener Footprint Fair, when a lady approached me and said, “I don’t like it because it’s got no FRUNK!”. “Sorry, excuse me,” I replied. “There’s no FRUNK. My BMW has a FRUNK and that’s why I love it,” she clarified.
You’re reading FRUNK now, but in the throes of a conversation, it took a while before I realised she wasn’t swearing at me.
We then had a long conversation about the dream of extra storage under the bonnet that we thought would come when you removed the internal combustion engine.
To be fair, the car I had on display was a Hyundai Kona small SUV. There was no FRUNK because there wasn’t much room under the bonnet. And the Kona EV was built on a chassis that was designed for a petrol car and adapted to be an electric car.
All Tesla models have a FRUNK. And the new Hyundai IONIQ5 has one. We did some more research and found out the Polestar 2 has storage in the front. The BMW i3 has storage under the bonnet but the latest electric models from BMW don’t.
Do you need a FRUNK? Unless you’ve been driving a Porsche 911 you wouldn’t know they exist. Though according to the woman that started the conversation, once you’ve had a FRUNK, you’ll never buy a car without one.
