With the debate raging on the National Fuel Efficiency Standards, would you launch a new dual cab ute into the Australian market? Yes, if you’re planning to make it electric.
A product development program for any new vehicle begins 6-7 years before the launch. So Kia has been planning this dual can ute for some time. It’s hard to believe, with the political climate in Australia leaning towards a strong stance on fuel efficiency standards, that they haven’t designed the new light commercial platform with the ability to take an electric powertrain.
The fleet team at Kia have been spreading the word since 2023 that they are planning to launch a dual cab ute. And the sponsorship of the Brisbane Broncos now appears to the a strategic move to build brand awareness in QLD which loves utilities and 4X4 vehicles.
Until now there’s been little information and lots of speculation on the name and design. Fleet EV News can confirm that the local fleet team have had input during the product development process, and the Australian market appears to be the main target for Kia HQ.
A marketing campaign was launched (Super Bowl style) in conjunction with the opening round of the NRL in Las Vegas to tease the audience about the name. It may be a marketing stunt, or a real time focus group, but it appears the new Kia utility will be named after a famous Australian sporting personality.
Other than the commercial, there’s little detail on the Kia Australia website. Fleet Managers can register to get updates as Kia completes the Australian development for the new ute including details of durability testing such as towing, local ride and handling, the final design reveal, and first release of specifications.
