EVSE, a leading provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Australia and New Zealand, has significantly expanded its national footprint through the acquisition of ENGIE’s EV charging network. The strategic move sees EVSE take control of more than 200 public charging sites, including high-profile locations like Chadstone – Australia’s largest shopping centre – and Chatswood Chase in Sydney.
The acquisition, announced on 7 April 2025, marks a major milestone in EVSE’s growth journey under the ownership of smart energy infrastructure firm Intellihub Group. While the value of the transaction remains undisclosed, the immediate impact is clear: EVSE has cemented its position as a dominant player in Australia’s rapidly growing EV charging landscape.
“This is a game changer,” said Brendan Wheeler, CEO of EVSE. “In a single transaction, EVSE now has a presence in an additional 200 high-traffic, high-visibility locations, providing greater convenience and support for customers using the Exploren Charging Network – the fastest growing EV charging network in Australia.”
The newly acquired charging stations utilise DC fast charging technology, allowing drivers to top up their batteries in as little as 30 minutes. The upgrade in charging speed is a win for EV drivers tackling longer road trips and looking for a fast and reliable recharge option in convenient retail and urban locations.
Wheeler emphasised the importance of the acquisition in delivering a more integrated user experience. “The Exploren Charging Network simplifies the way in which customers access EV public charging solutions by providing a singular payment interface for sites across the country,” he explained. “This transaction is a critical piece in the puzzle of delivering seamless charging access at home, at work and on the road.”
The integration of ENGIE’s public charging assets strengthens EVSE’s mission to accelerate Australia’s transition to electric mobility and support national emissions reduction targets. It also builds on the strengths of the Intellihub Group, which already manages over 2.8 million smart meters across the region, providing data-driven solutions to help manage and optimise the energy grid.
Founded in 2015, EVSE has built its reputation on offering smart EV charging solutions across residential, commercial, and public applications. The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is reflected in the rapid growth of its Exploren network, which now stands as one of the most extensive charging platforms available to Australian drivers.
As the EV market continues to surge, industry experts say the move positions EVSE to play a leading role in meeting future demand. With more drivers turning to electric vehicles, the ability to offer convenient, reliable and fast charging will be key to removing barriers to adoption.
