MG Motor has announced the local launch of two new electric vehicles under a new premium sub-brand, IM Presented by MG Motor. The new models — the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV — are now available for reservation in Australia, with drive-away pricing starting from $60,990.
The IM5 and IM6 were previewed earlier this year at the Melbourne Motor Show. The vehicles have been jointly developed by SAIC Motor (MG’s parent company), ZJ Hi Tech, and Alibaba Group. According to MG, the IM name stands for “Intelligence in Motion”, with a focus on advanced vehicle technology and AI-driven features.
Model Range and Pricing
The range includes three trim levels for both body styles:
| Trim | Battery / Drivetrain | Drive-Away Price (AUD) |
|---|---|---|
| Premium | 75kWh RWD | $60,990 |
| Platinum | 100kWh RWD | $69,990 |
| Performance | 100kWh AWD | $80,990 |
Both the IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV share the same platform and battery options. All variants are supported by a seven-year warranty, provided servicing is completed within the authorised IM dealer network.
Range and Charging
The IM5 has a claimed range of up to 755km (NEDC), while the larger IM6 SUV is rated at 670km (NEDC). Both models support fast DC charging, with MG stating a 30–80% charge can be completed in approximately 15 minutes.
While NEDC is not typically used in Australia (where WLTP and ADR figures are more common), it does provide an indication of potential range. Real-world results are expected to be lower depending on use case, driving conditions and load.
Vehicle Technology and Features
One of the key technology highlights of the new models is the rear-wheel steering system, which allows for up to 12 degrees of rear-wheel articulation. This system reduces the turning circle at low speeds and is intended to improve stability at higher speeds. MG reports that the IM5 achieved a Moose Test result of 91km/h – a high benchmark for the manoeuvre.
Other notable features include:
- Dual digital displays: a 10.5” centre touchscreen and a 26.3” infotainment screen
- 20-speaker audio system
- Long wheelbase (2,950mm) for increased rear legroom
- Panoramic sunroof and high-spec interior finishes
The IM5 and IM6 also include AI-enhanced functions such as Rainy Night Mode and an “AI Chauffeur”, which uses 360-degree camera systems to support or automate certain driving tasks. Integration with the MG iSMART app enables remote vehicle monitoring, route planning, and charging management from a smartphone.
Relevance for Fleets and Organisations
The IM range may be of interest to organisations considering higher-spec electric vehicles for executive transport or transitioning senior leadership fleets. The rear-wheel steering and long driving range address some of the common concerns about EV practicality in urban and regional use.
However, as a new entry in the premium EV segment from MG, fleet buyers may wish to monitor real-world performance, servicing access, and resale value over time.
