An exciting new chapter for sustainability started in November, with the President of the Senate, the Hon Senator Sue Lines and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon Milton Dick MP switching on the first of 58 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at Parliament House.
Ten EV charging points were switched on in the public car park at Parliament House with two of the chargers dedicated to accessible car parking spaces.
The remaining 48 charging stations will be installed over the coming months across other Parliament House car parks.
“It’s very positive that Parliament House is leading the way to support the uptake of electric vehicles by providing reliable and accessible charging solutions,” says President Sue Lines. “The allocation of chargers to accessible parking spots reflects our ongoing commitment to improving accessibility to Parliament House for all visitors.”
“This is the first public EV charging facility in the Parliamentary Triangle. Once this project is completed, it will be one of the largest installations of EV charging facilities in Canberra,” says Speaker Milton Dick.
“Parliament House is one of the most visited buildings in Australia, with around 800,000 visitors each year. It is important that we continue to meet the evolving needs of our visitors.”
“The new EV charging facility is an important part of our commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable Parliament House.”
The project, undertaken in partnership with local energy provider ACTEWAGL, is an important part of the work to enhance both the sustainability of Parliament House and the experience for visitors.
