Volkswagen has updated its ID.4 electric SUV for MY27, introducing physical steering wheel controls, a new infotainment system and additional driver assistance features across the Pro and GTX variants.
For fleet buyers, the changes put everyday usability and safety at the centre of the update, with improvements to navigation, speed assistance and parking technology.
Physical controls return
One of the most practical changes is the return of physical steering wheel controls, accompanying Volkswagen’s new Innovision infotainment system.
The system features a 12.9-inch touchscreen with integrated satellite navigation. Volkswagen says the combination delivers a more intuitive user experience.
For pool fleets, where employees regularly move between vehicles, control layout and ease of use are relevant considerations when assessing driver familiarisation requirements.
Navigation also works with the enhanced ID. Light system, a thin LED strip at the base of the windscreen. It provides visual guidance, including animated directional cues for upcoming turns.
More assistance behind the wheel
The MY27 update adds Traffic Sign Recognition, Front Cross Traffic Assist, a Proactive Occupant Protection System and a Predictive Speed Limiter across the range.
Volkswagen says the Predictive Speed Limiter works with Adaptive Cruise Control and Traffic Sign Recognition to automatically adjust vehicle speed in response to changing speed limits.
The Area View surround-view camera system has also been enhanced, with optimised guidance functionality and wheel protection technology.
These additions give fleet managers more to assess during a vehicle trial, particularly for drivers working in urban environments with frequent speed changes, tight parking spaces and busy intersections. Driver induction should include how the assistance systems operate and when the driver needs to intervene.
Revised batteries and fast charging
Volkswagen has revised battery specifications for both variants. The ID.4 Pro now has an increased gross battery capacity of 84kWh, while the GTX adopts an 82kWh gross battery capacity.
Both continue to support DC fast charging at up to 175kW.
A focus on the ownership experience
The update also introduces Driving Experience Selection with Atmospheres, allowing occupants to personalise the cabin through coordinated adjustments to comfort and convenience settings.
Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Brand Director Piergiorgio Minto said the changes were intended to improve the ownership experience.
“The MY27 updates introduce a meaningful range of enhancements across technology, safety and personalisation,” he said.
The ID.4 Pro is priced from $60,990 and the GTX from $70,990, both excluding on-road costs.
For fleets considering an electric SUV, the MY27 update provides a reason to revisit the ID.4. The return of physical controls and expanded safety assistance address practical aspects of daily driving, while the final purchasing decision will still depend on vehicle suitability, charging arrangements and whole-of-life costs.
