The crisp winter’s day in Sydney set the perfect scene for the highly anticipated launch of the MG Cyberster. Held at the MG Dealership in Sydney, this event marked a significant milestone for MG as they introduced their latest electric sports car to the Australian market. The launch was a showcase of innovation and design, aimed at reshaping the perception of electric vehicles (EVs).
A new era for MG
The event commenced with an opening speech by Brett Jones, the EV Portfolio Manager at MG. Brett highlighted the legacy and forward-thinking approach of the MG brand. “Our marketing material at the launch says ‘legends live forever,’ and it’s especially true for our brand. You see the DNA of our products and MGB’s spirit and legacy within this vehicle,” Brett stated. His words resonated with the audience, setting the tone for what was to come.
Following Brett, Giles Belcher, the Chief Commercial Officer at MG Australia, took the stage. Giles emphasised the transformative journey of the MG brand over the past century.
“We’re experiencing a success story in ways that 100 years ago we could never have imagined. Our work enriches not just our lives but also those of our communities and, most importantly, our customers,” Giles remarked. He also hinted at the exciting future of MG, mentioning the launches of new models like the ZS and the all-new MG3.
Akshat Abuja (AK), Senior Product and Strategy Manager at MG Australia, shared his excitement about the Cyberster.
“Back in 2019, I saw the concept images of the Cyberster, which I never thought could turn into a reality. And today, we are here right in front of this car,” Akshat expressed. He detailed the impressive design and performance features of the Cyberster, including its powerful dual motor powertrain and advanced technology.
The MG Cyberster: A visual and technical marvel
The MG Cyberster’s design is nothing short of breathtaking, as evidenced by the images from the launch. The car boasts a striking red finish that exudes a sense of luxury and performance. The sleek, aerodynamic lines are complemented by the iconic scissor doors, adding a touch of futuristic flair. The convertible sports car is designed to turn heads and challenge the notion that EVs are merely practical and utilitarian.
Under the hood, the Cyberster is equipped with a formidable electric dual motor powertrain that delivers an impressive 375 kW of power. This powerhouse enables the Cyberster to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, making it a true contender in the sports car arena. The 77 kWh battery ensures a substantial range, while the advanced technology embedded within the vehicle promises a seamless driving experience.
The interior of the Cyberster is just as impressive as its exterior. Stepping inside, drivers are greeted by a state-of-the-art digital wrap-around cockpit that provides all the necessary information at a glance. A central digital screen offers additional control and connectivity options, ensuring that the driver remains in command at all times. The fit and finish of the interior materials speak to the high standards of MG, offering both comfort and sophistication.
Performance and innovation
The performance capabilities of the MG Cyberster extend beyond its impressive acceleration. The car is engineered for optimal handling and control, featuring an all-wheel-drive system and a low centre of gravity. The 50:50 golden axle load ratio ensures balanced weight distribution, enhancing stability and agility on the road. Brembo brakes and an ultra-short braking distance further contribute to the car’s safety and performance.
AK highlighted the versatility of the Cyberster, noting its ability to switch between different driving modes.
“It can also be put into a comfort mode and become your daily drive,” he explained. This adaptability makes the Cyberster suitable for various driving conditions, from spirited weekend drives to everyday commuting.
A new chapter for electric vehicles in Australia
The launch of the MG Cyberster represents a bold step forward for MG and the Australian EV market. Estimated to be priced close to $130,000, the Cyberster is positioned to attract buyers who seek both performance and innovation in their vehicles.
As the Cyberster embarks on a nationwide roadshow, allowing more Australians to experience this groundbreaking vehicle firsthand and challenge the perception that electric cars are boring and practical.
