Volvo Trucks has expanded its electric truck line-up with the launch of a new 14-tonne version of the Volvo FL Electric, aimed squarely at urban delivery and municipal operations.
One of Volvo’s earliest battery-electric medium-duty trucks, the FL Electric has already gained traction with transport operators looking for a compact, low-noise and zero-tailpipe-emissions solution for city work. The new 14-tonne variant becomes an entry point to the range, balancing usable range with improved payload capacity for stop-start metropolitan duties.
Volvo says the focus is on buying only the battery capacity required for the job. Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, described the new model as an ideal inner-city workhorse, designed to maximise productivity and profitability without over-specifying battery size.
Flexibility remains a core strength. The 14-tonne FL Electric will be offered with multiple wheelbases, axle layouts and battery configurations, allowing fleets to tailor the truck to specific applications. Battery placement has been designed to avoid interference with common bodybuilding installations, while a minimum vehicle width of 2.4 metres improves agility in tight urban environments.
The same battery technology will also be shared across Volvo’s wider electric FL and FE ranges, covering vehicles from 14 tonnes through to FE Electric models with gross combination weights of up to 26 tonnes.
Volvo has been offering electric versions of the FL and FE since 2019 and now has eight battery-electric truck models in production globally, with more than 5,000 electric trucks delivered worldwide.
