Australia’s first all-electric vehicle upfitter, AUSEV, has announced the Tesla Model Y will now be available in its fleet of vehicles tailored for the mining and resources sector. The announcement signals a shift in thinking for fleet operations traditionally reliant on 4×4 utes and diesel-powered vehicles.
From 4×4 Utes to EV Innovation
For decades, the mining industry has defaulted to diesel 4×4 utes as the workhorse for operations. Rugged, simple, and proven, they have been the go-to solution. But AUSEV’s introduction of the Tesla Model Y challenges that assumption. With its combination of performance, safety, durability, and zero-emission credentials, the Model Y offers an alternative way of solving the transport problem in harsh industrial environments.
“This vehicle is not only built for performance, safety, and durability, but it also represents a big leap forward in how the mining sector can transition toward cleaner and smarter fleet solutions. Our customers are looking for reliability, lower cost of ownership, efficiency and innovation. The Model Y delivers on all fronts.”
BOSSCAP Group CEO Edward Kocwa, parent company of AUSEV.
Fit-for-Purpose Modifications
AUSEV is leading the way in making EVs practical for mining operations, offering everything from upfitting to mine-spec modifications. These adaptations mean the Model Y isn’t just an electric SUV—it’s a tool designed to meet the demanding safety and operational requirements of mine sites. This positions the EV as a genuine replacement candidate for certain traditional fleet vehicles.
“The Model Y is the ultimate addition to any fleet building for a sustainable future. It’s quiet, safe, cost-effective, and loaded with technology that enhances productivity. We are excited to see AUSEV Upfit these and lease them to their resource sector clients.”
Tesla’s Regional Corporate Manager for Australia & New Zealand, James Middleton.
What This Means for Fleet Managers
For Fleet Managers in mining and resources, this development is more than just a new vehicle option—it’s a sign that fleet solutions are evolving. Instead of asking “Which ute do I buy next?”, the better question may be “What transport outcome am I trying to achieve?”
The Model Y’s entry into mine fleets illustrates that lower total cost of ownership, zero emissions, and advanced safety systems are now part of the equation. When paired with AUSEV’s mining modifications, the EV becomes more than capable of meeting the operational needs of remote sites.
A Signal of the Future
This move by AUSEV should be viewed as a signal to the wider fleet industry: traditional 4×4 solutions won’t always be the default answer. As mining companies look to decarbonise, improve safety, and reduce running costs, electric vehicles like the Tesla Model Y are proving they can step up—when the problem is looked at differently.
What’s the difference?
To meet strict site requirements, AUSEV’s mine-spec package for the Tesla Model Y includes essential safety and durability upgrades such as high-visibility light bars and reflective striping, bull bars and underbody protection for rough terrain, isolation switches, heavy-duty battery shielding, and enhanced communication systems. These modifications ensure the Model Y complies with mining safety standards while retaining the performance and efficiency of a factory-built EV.
