BMW Australia has announced a new entry point into its next-generation electric vehicle range, confirming the BMW iX3 40 will arrive in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2026 priced from $89,900, placing it below the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles.
The new model expands the recently launched BMW iX3 range and brings the brand’s Neue Klasse technology platform to a broader audience. While positioned as the entry variant, the iX3 40 retains many of the advanced technologies and features introduced with the flagship BMW iX3 50 xDrive.
For fleet buyers and novated leasing customers, the pricing is significant. Falling below the LCT threshold improves affordability while still delivering a premium electric SUV with long-range capability and advanced digital technologies.
Up to 635km of Driving Range
The BMW iX3 40 is powered by BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, developed specifically for the Neue Klasse platform. A single electrically excited synchronous motor mounted on the rear axle produces 235kW and 500Nm, enabling a 0-100km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 200km/h.
Energy is supplied by an 82.6kWh usable battery pack that uses cylindrical lithium-ion cells with approximately 20 per cent higher energy density than BMW’s previous battery generation. The battery forms part of the vehicle’s structure through a cell-to-pack design, improving efficiency and reducing weight.
BMW claims a WLTP driving range of up to 635 kilometres, positioning the iX3 40 among the longest-range electric SUVs in its segment.
Fast Charging Becomes a Key Selling Point
One of the headline features is the vehicle’s high-speed charging capability.
Built around BMW’s new 800-volt architecture, the iX3 40 supports DC fast charging at up to 300kW. Under optimal conditions, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just 21 minutes, while a 10-minute charging session can add up to 300 kilometres of driving range.
Standard AC charging is available at up to 11kW, while an optional 22kW AC charging system can recharge the battery from empty to full in approximately four hours and 15 minutes.
The charging performance is likely to appeal to organisations evaluating EVs for higher-utilisation fleet applications where downtime is a critical consideration.
Digital-First Interior
Inside, the iX3 40 showcases BMW’s new digital operating environment.
The centrepiece is BMW Panoramic iDrive running the latest BMW Operating System X. Key information is projected across a panoramic display stretching from A-pillar to A-pillar, creating a more immersive driver experience.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant is integrated with Amazon Alexa+, allowing drivers to control vehicle functions through natural voice interaction. The system combines voice, touch and haptic controls as part of BMW’s multimodal user interface.
Four “Superbrains” Power the Vehicle
Under the skin, BMW says the Neue Klasse platform represents a major leap forward in vehicle computing power.
The new architecture uses four central high-performance computers, described by BMW as “superbrains”, delivering more than 20 times the processing capability of previous systems. These computers manage driving dynamics, automated driving functions, infotainment and vehicle comfort systems.
At the centre of the driving experience is BMW’s new “Heart of Joy” control computer, which works alongside Dynamic Performance Control software to manage vehicle responses up to ten times faster than previous architectures. BMW says the result is greater precision, agility and driver confidence.
Premium Specification Standard
Despite its position as the entry model, the iX3 40 includes a comprehensive list of standard equipment.
Highlights include a panoramic glass roof, Harman Kardon audio system, BMW 3D Head-Up Display, heated and electrically adjustable front seats, heated steering wheel, wireless charging, Parking Assistant Plus, Driving Assistant Plus, Digital Key Plus and Veganza upholstery. An M Sport Package is also standard.
Customers can further personalise the vehicle through BMW’s expanded Individual Program, which introduces a broader range of premium paint finishes and wheel options.
What It Means for Fleet Buyers
The arrival of the iX3 40 gives fleet buyers another premium EV option with a combination of long range, fast charging and competitive pricing.
With a list price below the LCT threshold, up to 635km of range and BMW’s latest electric vehicle platform, the iX3 40 could be particularly attractive for executive fleets, salary packaging programs and organisations looking to reduce emissions without compromising vehicle capability or driver appeal.
