Isuzu Motors Limited has confirmed in an official statement that it plans to bring a battery-electric D-MAX ute to Australia, however local launch details are yet to be established.
The announcement comes after Isuzu’s Chief Operating Officer announced back in October 2023 that the brand was working on a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) inline with its zero-emission plans for the future.
Set to be debuted at the 45th Bangkok International Motor Show from March 27 to April 7, the all-electric ute will be shown to the public for the first time in prototype form.
The prototype features a full-time 4×4 system with a front motor producing 40kW and rear motor producing 90kW, offering a combined 130kW/325Nm and top speed of more than 130km/h.
Range has not been disclosed but, with a 66.9kWh battery, it is unlikely to offer more than 300km of driving between charges – based on what other models are able to achieve with a similar battery capacity.
Despite being down on torque compared with a 3.0-litre diesel-powered D-MAX, the electric ute will be capable of carrying up to 1000kg in its tray and will be able to tow a full 3500kg.
Pricing and official launch dates are yet to be confirmed, however Isuzu announced it will roll out the D-MAX EV in select European markets such as Norway in 2025 before introducing the model in the UK, Australia, Thailand and other suitable countries.
Talking to Fleet EV News, Isuzu Ute Australia (IAL) says it can not provide timing details but will continue working with the factory to establish a product that meets the needs of local customers.
“At this point in time, we are unable to comment on specifics relating to future model plans,” an IUA spokesperson said.
“That said, as part of our due diligence, IUA will continue to monitor the local market requirements including the reception of Hybrid and BEVs, and work with the factory to provide a product mix to meet Australian consumer needs.”
We expect to find out more about the D-MAX EV following its Bangkok debut this month.
