When Hyundai launched their IONIQ 5 medium all-electric SUV it was a distinctive design that used relatively straight design lines, to give a hot-hatch appearance, to aid in maximising the functional space inside the vehicle. That sounds like it might be a box on wheels but Hyundai has made a good-looking vehicle and it is selling very well.
Now the Koran company has just shown its next electric vehicle, the Ioniq 6 which is nothing like the “five”. They call it a streamliner design with a “Single-curved aerodynamic profile”.
It is very sedan-like which from the side, the bonnet, roof, and boot profile arches from the front to the back like a bridge.
The front has shunned the more recent, squinty look for headlights, evoking to my mind the look of the front of the mid-70s Chevy Monza as long as you put a Perspex type covering over the Monza dual headlights as they did on circuit racing vehicles.
The rear of the vehicle has a certain boat-tail look. It has a stunningly low coefficient of drag at 0.21.
Their description of the vehicle at this stage is high on buzz words. The interior for example is described as “a comfortable hideaway and personal space, replete with practical features and sustainable materials to facilitate a mindful, eco-friendly mobility experience and lifestyle”. We are working on translations at the moment.
