GAC International has restructured its Australian operations, bringing the Oceania and UK markets together under a new regional leadership model as the Chinese automotive group continues to build its presence in Australia.
Aries Zhao has been appointed CEO of GAC Australia, effective immediately, while also taking responsibility for the newly aligned UK and Oceania region as President of the UK and Oceania Regional Centre. Cheney Liang will continue as Chief Operating Officer of the Australian business.
The changes were announced following GAC Australia’s inaugural dealer conference in Sydney, where the company outlined its international strategy, long-term plans for Australia and its approach to supporting the growing local dealer network.
GAC says combining the UK and Oceania operations reflects the similarities between the two right-hand-drive markets, particularly around vehicle safety, quality, technology and customer expectations.
“Taking on the leadership of our Australian operations at such a pivotal moment is an honour,” Zhao said.
“During our first year, we have already established an exceptional product lineup and the foundations of a strong customer-focused dealer network.”
Zhao said the new regional structure would allow GAC to take advantage of common requirements across the UK and Oceania while continuing to account for differences between individual markets.
“The joining of the Oceania and UK regions represents a natural fit for our global right-hand-drive strategy,” he said.
“Both markets share high standards for vehicle safety, quality, technology and customer care standards.”
The appointment also marks a transition for Kevin Shu, who led GAC Australia following the brand’s Australian launch. Shu will remain with GAC International and move into responsibilities across other markets.
GAC Group Vice President and GAC International Chairman Jack Chen told dealers that Australia remains an important part of the company’s global expansion plans.
“Australia is a key strategic market for GAC’s global expansion, and you are our most important partners in building our success here,” Chen said.
The Australian dealer network is already expanding, with all 46 appointed GAC dealerships represented at the inaugural conference.
GAC Burwood and GAC Dandenong were recognised as the leading dealerships for the first half of the year, with each recording more than 300 retail vehicle sales.
For Australian buyers, including fleets assessing emerging electric and electrified vehicle brands, the leadership restructure is another indication that GAC is investing in the organisational and dealer infrastructure needed to support its longer-term ambitions in the market.
Zhao brings extensive experience across sales, aftersales, customer relations and dealer network development, having previously held senior roles with GAC Toyota, GAC Mitsubishi and GAC International.
