AGL Energy has joined forces with AMPECO to tackle one of Australia’s biggest barriers to electric vehicle (EV) adoption—limited access to home charging. The partnership will roll out kerbside EV charging solutions in high-density urban areas, starting with Sydney.
With around 30% of Australians lacking off-street parking, apartment dwellers often face challenges accessing convenient and affordable charging. To address this, AGL has deployed more than 150 AC charging stations across inner Sydney in just six months using AMPECO’s EV charging management platform.
“We went from zero sites to 150+ sites in a 6-month span, thanks to AMPECO’s platform infrastructure and team support,” said Shiv Nandwani, eMobility Product Owner at AGL Energy. “We’ve basically taken Sydney from barely having any AC chargers for people who live in apartments to now a significant number of residential streets in inner Sydney having an AGL EV charger.”
The collaboration marks a shift in how EV charging is approached. Rather than viewing chargers purely as a revenue stream, AGL sees EV charging as a strategic tool to accelerate transport electrification. Every new EV driver represents a potential long-term energy customer, supporting AGL’s broader renewable energy goals—including its target of 12 gigawatts of new renewable generation by 2035.
Through AMPECO’s platform, AGL can maintain consistent pricing, manage grid demand in real time, and achieve 99% uptime. The system also shares telemetry data for grid capacity planning and integrates with AGL’s enterprise systems, supported by a white-label driver app for a seamless customer experience.
“AGL exemplifies the forward-thinking companies driving change in Australia’s EV charging landscape,” said Orlin Radev, CEO at AMPECO. “Their innovative approach to kerbside charging demonstrates the transformative potential of AMPECO’s platform when combined with visionary deployment strategies.”
As AGL continues expanding its electrification services, this partnership sets a new standard for urban EV charging accessibility—helping Australians without garages join the EV transition and advancing the country’s move toward a cleaner, smarter energy future.
