BYD has confirmed that its first seven-seat SUV for the Australian market—the SEALION 8—will launch in Q1 of 2026, offering a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) option for families and fleets seeking performance, technology, and environmental benefits in a full-size package.
This marks a significant milestone for the global New Energy Vehicle leader, as it expands its SEALION SUV range with a model tailored for Australian conditions and consumer expectations.
Two Powertrains, One Mission
The BYD SEALION 8 will be available with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options from launch:
- DM-i (Intelligence)
- DM-p (Performance)
Both powertrains utilise BYD’s next-generation 5.0 platform and are fitted with its signature Blade battery technology—19kW for the DM-i and 35.6kW for the DM-p.
The DM-i variant combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (110kW/220Nm) with a 200kW/315Nm front-mounted electric motor, delivering brisk acceleration from 0–100km/h in just 8.6 seconds.
The DM-p ups the ante with dual motors—one at each axle—delivering a total output of 341kW and 675Nm. This all-wheel-drive variant sprints from 0–100km/h in just 4.9 seconds, making it one of the fastest seven-seat SUVs on sale, regardless of price.
Designed to Impress Inside and Out
The SEALION 8’s design language follows the sleek, bold aesthetics of its EV sibling, the SEALION 7. From the dynamic front fascia and sweeping roofline to the full-length rear LED light bar, the vehicle delivers a premium, athletic stance.
Inside, the cabin promises an elevated experience for all seven occupants. Premium materials and high-end finishes will be offered across the range, with top-tier DM-p variants featuring heated and cooled massaging seats in the first and second rows. Advanced infotainment and safety systems are expected to be standard, reinforcing BYD’s reputation for offering luxury-level features at exceptional value.
Safety and Technology for Modern Mobility
The SEALION 8 will be equipped with a comprehensive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) to ensure peace of mind for drivers and passengers. Details are yet to be confirmed, but BYD has indicated that the model will meet the expectations of today’s discerning SUV buyers in both passive and active safety systems.
A Flagship Model for BYD Australia
BYD Australia General Manager Wing You said the company has listened to customer feedback and is excited to deliver a vehicle that meets a clear need in the local market.
“We’ve listened to our customers. We know the desire is here for a proper full-size, seven-seater PHEV SUV,” said Wing You.
“We’re incredibly proud of what the SEALION 8 will represent for BYD in Australia. It’s going to be a flagship model for us, and, in classic BYD fashion, it will exceed the consumers’ expectations for tech, luxury, and value.”
Fleet Implications
For Fleet Managers and Sustainability Managers, the SEALION 8 presents a compelling option as a family-sized SUV with ultra-low emissions. The plug-in hybrid architecture offers electric-only operation for daily driving and a petrol engine for longer trips—ideal for organisations navigating charging limitations while still seeking to lower their Scope 1 emissions.
Finance Managers considering novated lease options or fleet capex planning will appreciate the balance of power, efficiency, and BYD’s proven track record of delivering high-spec vehicles at competitive price points.
