GAC Australia has officially unveiled the local specifications for its all-electric medium SUV, the AION V, marking the next step in the brand’s expansion into the Australian market. Available in Premium and Luxury trim levels, the AION V promises to combine long-range efficiency, cutting-edge safety technology, and global design flair in a package designed for local roads and lifestyles.
A proven global performer
Already available in more than 20 markets worldwide, the AION V is one of GAC’s most successful EVs. The brand itself sold over two million vehicles in China last year, drawing from decades of R&D and collaborations with Toyota and Honda. That engineering depth shows in the AION V’s core design, which prioritises range, performance, and peace of mind for EV buyers.
Powertrain and range
Under the sleek body sits GAC’s proprietary 400V electric architecture, paired with a 75.26kWh LFP “Magazine Battery 2.0” that delivers up to 510km of WLTP range. Fast charging from 30% to 80% takes just 16 minutes using a 180kW charger, while the 150kW motor produces 210Nm of torque and a top speed of 160km/h.
Efficiency is enhanced through structural lightweighting — the extensive use of aluminium keeps mass low — and a heat pump air-conditioning system ensures the AION V performs efficiently even in Australia’s varying climates.
Magazine Battery 2.0: safety at its core
The AION V’s Magazine Battery 2.0 represents a significant leap forward in EV safety. Using flame-retardant electrolytes, advanced cooling systems, and structural reinforcements, it’s designed to withstand extreme twist and impact tests without fire or thermal runaway. Add compatibility with the latest i-Size child-seat standard, and it’s clear that GAC is targeting Australian families who want both innovation and assurance.
Distinct global design
With design input from GAC’s studios in Milan, Los Angeles, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, the AION V blends muscular strength with minimalist elegance. Its “dragon claw” lighting signature, bold waistline, and sculpted wheel arches give it an assertive presence on the road, while a panoramic roof and acoustic glass keep the cabin serene.
Inside, the AION V offers a 14.6-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, premium materials across key touchpoints, and rear legroom comparable to luxury SUVs. Both front seats can fully recline to form a “queen bed,” ideal for road trips or quick rest stops, while rear air vents and a smart power tailgate add everyday practicality.
Features that stand out
The Luxury variant steps things up with standout features designed for Australian lifestyles — like a 6.6-litre in-built refrigerator hidden in the centre armrest, capable of chilling up to 12 cans to 4°C or cooling down to -15°C. Both front seats offer eight-point massage, while heating and ventilation come standard across both trims.
Other premium details include:
- 360° camera system and adaptive cruise control
- Blind spot detection, rear collision warning, and lane-keeping assist
- Wireless phone charging, ambient lighting, and PM2.5 air filtration
- 978 litres of storage with the rear seats folded — enough to fit a 2m surfboard inside
Designed for Australian conditions
GAC Australia’s Deputy General Manager, Cheney Liang, said:
“We’ve already delivered the AION V in over 20 countries worldwide, and we’re delighted that Australians can now experience this exceptional, feature-rich SUV for themselves. Whether choosing the Premium or Luxury model, every AION V represents the very best of modern electric powertrain technology, combining safety, comfort and practicality that truly make a difference in Australian life.”
Coming soon
Pricing and warranty details will be announced closer to the official market launch, but based on its specs alone, the GAC AION V looks set to become one of the most compelling new entries in the growing mid-size electric SUV segment — offering luxury comfort, innovative technology, and real-world range without compromise.
