Nissan has confirmed that the next-generation QASHQAI will launch in Australia in 2026 with an e-POWER-only line-up, delivering an EV-like drive without the need to plug in. This marks a major shift for one of Australia’s most popular small SUVs, reflecting the growing demand for electrified powertrains among local buyers.
A Hybrid Like No Other
Unlike conventional hybrids that blend petrol and electric power through a gearbox, Nissan’s e-POWER system drives the wheels exclusively with an electric motor. A compact 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine generates electricity on demand, meaning drivers enjoy the smooth, instant acceleration of an EV while still being able to refuel in under five minutes at any service station.
Warwick Daly, Deputy Director Product & Retail Campaigns at Nissan Australia, said customer demand has driven the change.
“Australian drivers have spoken clearly through their purchasing decisions, particularly in higher-grade models – demonstrating clear preference for the smooth, efficient, and refined EV-like driving experience that e-POWER delivers,” Daly said.
Next-Generation e-POWER: More Efficient and Refined
The upgraded powertrain, benchmarked on the European model, brings significant gains over the previous generation:
- Fuel consumption: as low as 4.5L/100km (WLTP)
- 16% improvement in real-world fuel economy
- 14% better efficiency on highways
- CO₂ emissions reduced by 12% (from 116g/km to 102g/km)
- 1200km theoretical range on a single tank
- 5.6dB quieter cabin for EV-like refinement
- +10kW Sport Mode boost for sharper response
Australian Engineering at the Core
A standout feature of the new QASHQAI e-POWER is its X-in-1 powertrain components, engineered, prototyped, and manufactured at Nissan Casting Australia Plant (NCAP) in Dandenong South. The site is now the global sole supplier of these critical parts, proudly carrying the Australian Made kangaroo symbol into every QASHQAI sold worldwide.
This commitment not only strengthens Nissan’s global electrification strategy but also supports local jobs and showcases Australian expertise in advanced automotive manufacturing.
A Stepping Stone to Full EVs
For fleet buyers and novated lease customers, the QASHQAI e-POWER offers a practical entry point into electrification. Drivers gain the EV-like smoothness and regenerative braking benefits without relying on charging infrastructure, making it especially attractive for businesses balancing emissions targets with operational flexibility.
