Transit Systems, Australia’s largest integrated multi-modal transport operator, has welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement of 151 new battery-electric buses — another major step towards a cleaner, quieter and more sustainable public transport future for Sydney.
The new order brings the total number of buses purchased since the March 2023 election to 921, highlighting the scale and pace of the state’s zero-emission transition. The buses will be built by local manufacturers including Custom Denning and Volgren Australia, exceeding the Government’s 50 per cent local manufacturing target and supporting skilled Australian jobs.
Deliveries will be staged across Transit Systems’ depots in Leichhardt and Kingsgrove, both undergoing major upgrades to support the growing electric bus fleet.
By 2028, around 1,700 electric buses are expected to be operating across Sydney’s roads — delivering tangible benefits for passengers, local communities, and the environment.
Rino Matarazzo, Managing Director of Transit Systems NSW, said the announcement demonstrates the strength of collaboration between government, industry, and the community.
“The scale of this order demonstrates the State Government’s commitment to a sustainable transport future, while also supporting local jobs and Australian manufacturing,” Mr Matarazzo said.
“For customers, it means more of the smooth, quiet and comfortable journeys they have already begun to experience on our existing electric fleet.
“For the community, it means cleaner air and significant progress in reducing emissions from public transport. Transit Systems is proud to be at the forefront of this transformation.”
This latest investment reinforces NSW’s leadership in transport decarbonisation and underscores the vital role of partnerships between government and operators like Transit Systems in driving the state’s zero-emission future.
