BYD is charging into new territory with its most advanced SUV yet — the seven-seat SEALION 8, a bold new addition to Australia’s fastest-growing new energy vehicle lineup. Following strong consumer interest, the SEALION 8 has been fast-tracked for local arrival and is set to open for orders in December.
The SEALION 8 marks BYD’s first entry into the three-row SUV segment and comes with suspension tuning designed specifically for Australian roads. It blends sleek, European-inspired styling and family practicality with BYD’s latest fifth-generation DM (Dual Mode) hybrid system, which achieves an impressive 46% thermal efficiency — the highest in the industry.
Fleet buyers and novated lease customers will have a choice of three variants:
- Dynamic FWD
- Dynamic AWD
- Premium AWD
The AWD models debut BYD’s DM-p (Dual Mode–powerful) platform and DiSus-C smart suspension, pairing a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with dual electric motors for instant response and smooth EV-like acceleration. The system can intelligently switch between two- and all-wheel-drive modes, delivering both performance and efficiency — including a brisk 0–100km/h sprint in just 4.9 seconds.
Under the skin, the Dynamic FWD variant offers 205kW and 315Nm of combined output, backed by a 19kWh batterythat delivers up to 103km of electric-only range (NEDC). Step up to the AWD versions and the battery grows to 35.6kWh, increasing pure electric range to 152km and total output to a powerful 359kW and 675Nm.
Inside, the SEALION 8 balances premium comfort and practicality. The cabin features a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, wireless smartphone connectivity, and a 21-speaker premium audio system. The front and rear massage seats, 50W wireless charger, and up to 1960 litres of cargo space ensure the SUV is as functional as it is indulgent.
Safety hasn’t been overlooked either, with nine airbags, a 360° camera, and a comprehensive suite of intelligent driver assistance technologies standard across the range.
“The SEALION 8 is built for anyone who wants to drive the future, today,” said Stephen Collins, COO of BYD Australia. “It offers a level of versatility and comfort that is perfect for Australian families.”
Pricing will be announced closer to launch, but with expressions of interest already open, the SEALION 8 looks set to become a major player in the large SUV market — especially for fleets seeking lower emissions without sacrificing performance or comfort.
