The all-new Hyundai NEXO has achieved the highest possible five-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP safety assessment, underlining Hyundai’s continued focus on safety leadership as fleets explore zero-emission vehicle options.
As Hyundai’s next-generation hydrogen fuel-cell electric SUV, NEXO emits only water vapour at the tailpipe and forms part of the manufacturer’s broader electrification and hydrogen strategy. The five-star result places NEXO alongside Hyundai’s recent safety successes with IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 9, reinforcing consistency across its low- and zero-emission portfolio.
For Fleet Managers and Sustainability Managers assessing future powertrains, safety remains a non-negotiable requirement alongside emissions reduction. Euro NCAP testing showed the NEXO delivered strong performance across all four assessment categories: adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, vulnerable road user protection, and safety assistance technologies.
In Adult Occupant Protection, the NEXO scored 90 per cent, with Euro NCAP noting that the passenger compartment remained stable in frontal offset testing. Good protection was recorded for knees, femurs and all critical body regions for both driver and passenger. The vehicle also achieved maximum points in the side barrier test and demonstrated effective far-side occupant protection through the use of a centre airbag. Whiplash protection for both front and rear seats was rated as good in rear-impact scenarios.
Child Occupant Protection was equally strong, with an 85 per cent score. Six- and ten-year-old child dummies showed good protection in all critical body areas during both frontal and side-impact tests, earning maximum points. Euro NCAP also recognised the NEXO’s clear front passenger airbag deactivation status and compatibility with approved child restraint systems—an important consideration for mixed-use fleet vehicles.
Beyond crash protection, Euro NCAP highlighted the NEXO’s advanced safety systems, including its eCall emergency system, post-crash secondary impact prevention technology, and verified door and window operability in the event of vehicle submergence. These features are increasingly relevant for organisations focused on duty of care and risk management.
This result also builds on Hyundai’s hydrogen credentials. The previous-generation NEXO was the first fuel-cell electric vehicle tested by Euro NCAP in 2018, achieving a five-star rating under the standards of the time. The latest assessment demonstrates continued advancement in fuel-cell engineering, structural safety and driver-assistance technology.
For Finance Managers and fleet decision-makers evaluating long-term investment pathways, the five-star Euro NCAP rating strengthens the business case for considering hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles alongside battery electric options—particularly where refuelling speed, range, and operational continuity are key requirements.
