BYD Australia has taken another decisive step in making electrified vehicles more accessible, confirming sharp pricing for the new BYD SEALION 5 plug-in hybrid SUV.
Starting from just $33,990 (excluding on-road costs), the SEALION 5 becomes BYD’s most affordable plug-in hybrid SUV in Australia, positioning it as a compelling option not only for private buyers but also for fleets and novated lease customers looking to reduce fuel costs without moving to a full battery electric vehicle.
Electric driving, without range anxiety
Designed for everyday practicality, the SEALION 5 targets drivers who want the benefits of electric driving while retaining long-distance flexibility. Built on BYD’s electric-first platform and featuring the latest DM-i (Dual-Mode Intelligent) 4.0 Super Hybrid technology, the SEALION 5 delivers:
- Up to 100 km of pure electric range (NEDC)
- Combined driving range approaching 1,000 km
- Fuel consumption as low as 1.2 L/100 km in hybrid mode
For fleet managers, this combination supports meaningful emissions and fuel reductions for high-utilisation vehicles, without the charging constraints that can still exist in some regional or operational environments.
Two variants, same focus on safety and efficiency
The SEALION 5 will be offered in two variants, both incorporating BYD’s well-known Blade Battery technology, recognised for its durability and safety credentials:
| Variant | Price* |
|---|---|
| SEALION 5 ESSENTIAL | $33,990 |
| SEALION 5 PREMIUM | $37,990 |
Despite its aggressive pricing, BYD says there is no compromise on innovation or safety — a key consideration for organisations assessing whole-of-life cost and duty-of-care obligations.
A strong fit for fleets and novated leasing
The arrival of the SEALION 5 strengthens BYD’s electrified line-up at a time when many fleets are seeking practical transition technologies. Plug-in hybrids remain an important stepping stone for organisations working through charging access, policy updates, and driver education as part of broader EV transition planning.
BYD Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said the SEALION 5 is about giving Australians genuine choice.
“Australians want real choice when it comes to electric mobility solutions, and the SEALION 5 offers that at a price point that will appeal to Australian families,” Collins said.
“The SEALION 5 raises the bar in terms of new energy vehicle accessibility, without compromising on the features that make BYD great.”
He added that the launch, alongside the recent ATTO 1 and ATTO 2, continues BYD’s push to broaden access to new energy technology.
Bottom line for fleet buyers
With a sub-$35,000 entry price, strong electric-only capability, and long combined range, the BYD SEALION 5 lands as a highly competitive option for fleets and novated lease customers seeking lower running costs and reduced emissions — without asking drivers to change how they use their vehicle.
