Engineering and services firm UGL has begun a major transition of its national vehicle fleet to hybrid electric technology, with a focus on practical and low-emission alternatives that support operational efficiency and sustainability goals.
UGL operates a fleet of over 700 vehicles, with more than 85% made up of light commercial utility vehicles. Since 2024, the company has committed to introducing hybrid electric models as part of new vehicle purchases and end-of-lease replacements. The new additions include mild hybrid models such as the Toyota Hilux 48V, which use an electric motor to support the petrol or diesel engine.
According to UGL, the move delivers immediate benefits to fleet operations and emissions reductions. “Integrating hybrid electric vehicles into our fleet aligns with UGL’s operational, financial, and sustainability strategy and objectives,” said Aleksandar Lazarevski, Corporate Supply Chain and Procurement Manager. “We are tapping into sustainable supply chain options and hybrid electric vehicles are just one example of UGL’s proposition in providing clients sustainable solutions.”
The company notes three key advantages for its drivers:
- Lower emissions and fuel consumption, helping to reduce UGL’s overall carbon footprint.
- Cost parity with other light commercial vehicles, making hybrids a financially viable alternative.
- No compromise on vehicle capability or driver comfort, ensuring a smooth operational transition.
One early adopter is Project Engineer Steven Aung, who recently shifted into a hybrid passenger vehicle better suited to his work. “It is a great car to drive, especially suited for project managers or engineers who don’t need to carry bulky items or tow heavy loads,” he said. Steven reported fuel use of just 50 litres across 1,400 kilometres, highlighting the real-world efficiency of the new hybrid model.
UGL’s fleet transition is part of a broader offering to clients seeking sustainable plant and equipment solutions. As the availability of low-emission vehicles grows in Australia, UGL is positioning itself as a leader in providing practical and forward-thinking options.
