Australia Post is charging further into its sustainability journey with the rollout of 500 new Rapide 3 electric delivery vehicles, marking another milestone in modernising one of the nation’s largest delivery fleets.
The new three-wheeled Rapide 3s represent a major step up in performance, safety, and efficiency. Capable of travelling up to 180 kilometres on a single charge and reaching speeds of 80 km/h, the upgraded vehicles can carry up to 150 small parcels — a 400% increase in capacity compared to the outgoing Honda motorbikes.
That means fewer trips, faster deliveries, and improved productivity — a big win for both Posties and customers during the busy parcel season.
Australia Post Group CEO and Managing Director Paul Graham said the rollout is part of a long-term strategy to build “the Australia Post of the future.”
“This rollout is part of a broader transformation as we build the Australia Post of the future, one that is safer, more sustainable and ready to meet the changing needs of our customers,” Mr Graham said.
“We’ve been investing in electric delivery vehicles for over a decade, and we’re proud to operate Australia’s largest electric delivery vehicle fleet.”
Designed for Australian conditions
The Rapide 3 has been engineered with stability, comfort and safety in mind. The integrated canopy and windscreen provide better weather protection, while enhanced handling allows Posties to tackle varied terrain — from suburban streets to regional routes — with greater confidence.
Built specifically for Australian conditions, the new fleet supports the company’s goal of improving safety outcomes, reducing operational costs, and advancing towards its Net Zero 2050 target.
Delivering on sustainability goals
Australia Post’s electric delivery vehicles already clock up more than 29 million kilometres annually, proving the scalability and resilience of EV technology in daily operations.
To support this rollout, charging infrastructure has been expanded to over 37 sites nationwide, allowing vehicles to recharge on-site after each round. Training is also underway to ensure Posties can seamlessly transition to the new vehicles before the upcoming Peak period.
A decade of electrification
Australia Post began introducing electric vehicles more than 10 years ago and now operates Australia’s largest electric delivery fleet. The latest investment continues that trajectory, aligning with community expectations and global sustainability trends.
As parcel volumes continue to rise, initiatives like the Rapide 3 rollout highlight how fleet innovation can play a central role in cutting emissions while maintaining reliability and service quality across Australia’s vast delivery network.
