WEX has launched a new capability for Australian fleets that brings fuel and electric vehicle (EV) charging together in a single payments and reporting platform, signalling another step in the shift toward managing mixed fleets more efficiently.
The global payments provider announced that its Motorpass dashboard now integrates the Chargefox EV charging network, giving fleet operators access to thousands of public charging plugs through a single digital system. The integration has been delivered in partnership with Australian Motoring Services, operators of the Chargefox network.
The development positions Motorpass as the only multi-brand fuel card in Australia currently offering integrated digital EV charging payments, designed to support organisations managing both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles during the transition period.
A Practical Step for Mixed Fleets
For many Fleet Managers and Procurement Managers, the challenge is not simply adopting EVs but managing the operational complexity that comes with running a mixed fleet. That includes reconciling fuel and charging expenses, monitoring vehicle usage, and ensuring drivers can access infrastructure when needed.
Matt Arthur, Vice President and General Manager of WEX Australia, said simplifying access to charging infrastructure is a key enabler for fleet electrification.
“Electric vehicles are key to the energy transition in Australia. Providing simplified access to charging infrastructure nationwide is essential to supporting businesses through the transition with confidence,” said Arthur.
He added that bringing fuel and charging into a single system is intended to reduce administrative friction as fleets evolve.
“The introduction of digital payments infrastructure that combines EV charging capabilities with multi-brand fuel access, while supporting driver confidence through a single app, is a crucial next step to ease the burden on businesses as they navigate the energy transition.”
The announcement reflects a broader industry trend where payment providers and fleet management platforms are expanding beyond traditional fuel cards to support new energy models. As many organisations move gradually toward electrification rather than replacing entire fleets at once, integrated systems are becoming more relevant to day-to-day operations.
Addressing Range Anxiety and Driver Confidence
Range anxiety remains a commonly cited barrier to EV adoption in commercial fleets, particularly for regional and long-distance operations. According to recent industry data referenced in the announcement, range anxiety influenced up to 60% of EV purchase decisions as recently as late 2025.
For operational teams, the issue is less about vehicle technology and more about certainty—knowing drivers can complete tasks without delays caused by limited infrastructure or complex payment processes.
The updated Motorpass Driver app includes route-planning functionality that allows drivers to locate and access public chargers along their journey. The system currently provides access to more than 3,000 public charging ports nationwide through the Chargefox network.
This capability may help reduce pressure on depot charging infrastructure, particularly for organisations that operate vehicles across multiple locations or outside metropolitan areas.
From a fleet operations perspective, the ability to plan charging alongside fuel stops is likely to be viewed as a productivity tool rather than simply a technology upgrade. Reduced downtime, fewer scheduling conflicts, and improved trip planning can all contribute to lower operating costs and more predictable service delivery.
Reducing Administrative Complexity
Beyond driver convenience, the integration focuses heavily on back-office efficiency—an area that continues to be a significant consideration for fleet teams managing growing volumes of data.
The combined platform allows Fleet Managers and finance teams to track fuel and EV charging transactions in a single system, alongside other vehicle-related expenses such as tolls, maintenance, and car washes. Consolidated reporting can provide a clearer view of vehicle utilisation and total operating costs, supporting more informed replacement and procurement decisions.
Islam Hassan, Chief Customer Officer at Australian Motoring Services, said simplifying processes is critical as fleets transition to new vehicle technologies.
“As fleets transition to EVs, reducing complexity makes a real difference,” said Hassan.
“By integrating charging into the WEX Motorpass app, we’re giving mixed fleets one familiar platform across all vehicles. It streamlines reporting and compliance for managers, and keeps things simple for drivers, with no extra apps, and no new processes.”
For organisations working within structured procurement and governance frameworks—such as local government and large corporate fleets—the ability to produce consistent, auditable transaction data can support compliance requirements and financial reporting obligations.
Rapid Deployment for Existing Customers
One of the practical advantages highlighted in the announcement is the speed of implementation. Existing Motorpass customers can add the EV functionality to their current fuel cards within one business day, without needing to issue new cards or change payment processes.
This approach aligns with how many fleets are approaching electrification—incrementally rather than through large-scale fleet replacement programs.
From a fleet management perspective, the value of the integration will ultimately depend on how effectively it reduces administrative effort, improves driver productivity, and supports accurate cost tracking across different vehicle types.
As the number of EVs in Australian fleets continues to grow, tools that simplify daily operations are likely to become as important as the vehicles themselves.
