The BYD Sealion 6 Essential has arrived and is now the cheapest PHEV in Australia, with a starting price of $42,990 before on-road costs.
According to BYD distributor, EVDirect, the order books are now open for the new entry-level model with deliveries kicking off in March.
“The BYD Sealion 6 Essential represents our commitment to providing accessible and high-quality new energy vehicle solutions to Australian customers,” said EVDirect CEO, David Smitherman.
“This vehicle not only broadens our range but also underpins our mission to deliver premium features, advanced technology, and superior performance at a competitive price point.”
The Sealion 6 Essential features the same 18.3kWh battery as other models within the range, with an electric-only driving range of 80km, complemented by a 1.5L plug-in hybrid engine. The system produces a combined 160kW/300Nm.
According to BYDm the Sealion 6 Essential is capable of a combined range of more than 1000km and the five-star ANCAP safety features have also been retained.
“We’re delivering on our commitment to simplify the transition to new energy vehicles, notably with our fleet customers providing more options supporting them in meeting their sustainability targets,” said Mr Smitherman.
The BYD Sealion 6 was the top-selling PHEV in Australia last year, narrowly beating the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV to take out the title. The cheaper entry model is likely to help its cause in 2025, as it pushes to keep top spot.
