GWM has further refined its flagship electrified off-roader, introducing Australian-developed ride and handling upgrades to the Tank 500 Hi4-T PHEV along with a new interior vehicle-to-load (V2L) power outlet designed to boost practicality for both work and leisure users.
The latest enhancements form part of GWM’s AT-1 (pronounced “At One”) localisation program, which focuses on tailoring vehicles to Australian and New Zealand driving conditions.
For fleet buyers and novated lease customers considering a large plug-in hybrid SUV, the updates are aimed at improving everyday drivability without compromising the Tank 500’s off-road credentials.
According to GWM, the AT-1 package includes upgraded damper tuning and revised steering calibration, delivering more responsive handling and improved vehicle composure across a range of road conditions. The changes are designed to provide better steering feel and increased driver confidence whether operating in urban environments, on long-distance highway journeys or on challenging off-road terrain.
The Tank 500 Hi4-T PHEV has already attracted attention for combining a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain with genuine four-wheel-drive capability, and the latest updates suggest GWM is continuing to invest in refining the ownership experience for local customers.
A key addition for fleet and recreational users is the introduction of a 220V power outlet in the rear cargo area. Connected to the vehicle’s V2L system, the outlet allows owners to power a range of equipment directly from the vehicle. This could prove useful for tradespeople needing to run small power tools on-site, as well as for camping and outdoor recreation where portable appliances and accessories require access to electricity.
The addition effectively turns the Tank 500 into a mobile power source, expanding the practical benefits of its electrified architecture beyond fuel savings and reduced emissions.
GWM says the changes reflect its commitment to continually evolving its products to meet the expectations of Australian customers seeking advanced technology, premium comfort and genuine off-road capability.
The Tank 500 Hi4-T PHEV also becomes only the second GWM model to receive dedicated Australian and New Zealand-specific ride and handling tuning directly integrated into the factory production process. Rather than relying on local aftermarket modifications, the tuning is incorporated during manufacturing, ensuring every vehicle benefits from the same calibration developed specifically for regional road conditions.
For fleet operators, factory-developed local tuning can provide greater confidence in vehicle consistency across larger orders, while also ensuring the vehicle retains full manufacturer backing.
With plug-in hybrid technology continuing to attract interest from buyers looking for lower-emission alternatives without committing fully to battery-electric vehicles, GWM’s latest updates strengthen the Tank 500’s position in the growing market for electrified large SUVs capable of handling both family duties and demanding off-road applications.
