Logan City Council has been recognised with the 2025 Sustainability Award at the Queensland Local Government Awards for Excellence for its groundbreaking Future Fleet Transition. The award acknowledges Council’s strategic efforts to reduce emissions, cut fuel use, and modernise operations—all while delivering measurable environmental and operational benefits.
The transformation is underpinned by Logan City Council’s Green Fleet Strategy 2021–2026, which has driven a steady shift towards a more efficient and increasingly electrified vehicle fleet. Since 2018, the Council has reduced total fleet fuel use by 18%, thanks to better monitoring, smarter vehicle utilisation, and cleaner technologies.
Electric vehicles (EVs) now form a growing part of Council’s operations. While some EVs are already in use as shared pool vehicles, the next step will see EVs introduced into the leaseback vehicle fleet, allowing Council staff to take them home overnight. This not only expands the Council’s emissions reduction impact but also supports broader community visibility and acceptance of electric transport.
Importantly, the transition is being supported by sustainable infrastructure. Council’s mechanical workshop is now powered by a 100kW solar photovoltaic system, and features energy-efficient LED lighting. The facility is GreenStamp Level 3 certified, and mechanics are fully trained to service both hybrid and electric vehicles.
This holistic approach has made Logan City Council a leader in fleet sustainability, not just among local governments but across the broader public sector.
“The fleet is better monitored, more efficient, better maintained, better managed, increasingly electrified and is delivering significant environmental and operational cost savings,” according to the LGMA Awards magazine.
The award signals what’s possible when local governments align environmental targets with operational best practice—creating long-term savings, improved service delivery, and a pathway to net zero.
For Fleet Managers and Sustainability Officers considering a similar transition, Logan’s success offers a compelling blueprint: start with data, build capability in-house, and match ambition with execution.
The Local Government Managers Australia (LGMA) Awards for Excellence celebrate best practice and innovation across Queensland’s councils. The Sustainability category recognises initiatives that reduce environmental impact or enhance the long-term viability of council operations..
