As nominations continue to roll in for the 2026 Fleet News Group Awards, many organisations are asking the same question: what are the judges actually looking for?
The judging process has been designed to recognise practical achievements, measurable outcomes, and genuine leadership across the fleet industry — not simply polished marketing submissions.
The awards aim to identify organisations and suppliers that are setting benchmarks for best practice and delivering real operational improvements.
After nominations close on 30 June, an independent judging panel will review all entries and select three finalists in each category. Those finalists will then move to an industry voting stage where the broader fleet community will help decide the winners.
Here is what judges will be focusing on in each category.
Fleet of the Year
The Fleet of the Year Award recognises organisations that demonstrate mature, well-rounded fleet management practices across multiple operational areas.
Judges will be looking for evidence of strong governance, clear policies, effective utilisation management, financial control, safety programs, sustainability initiatives, stakeholder engagement, and continuous improvement.
Importantly, this category is not about fleet size. Smaller organisations with strong systems, leadership, and measurable outcomes can compete strongly against larger fleets.
The judges want to see organisations that treat fleet management as a strategic business function rather than simply an operational necessity.
Safe Fleet of the Year
For the Safe Fleet of the Year Award, judges will focus on organisations that take a holistic approach to fleet safety.
This includes more than just vehicle specifications or ANCAP ratings.
Judges will be looking for evidence of incident reporting systems, safety targets, executive commitment, driver education programs, risk management processes, and ongoing monitoring of safety performance.
Strong nominations will demonstrate how safety is embedded into organisational culture and operational decision-making.
The judges are also interested in organisations that can show measurable improvements in incident reduction or driver behaviour over time.
Fleet Sustainability Award
The Fleet Sustainability Award is designed to recognise organisations taking a strategic and measurable approach to reducing fleet emissions and environmental impact.
Judges are not simply looking for fleets that purchased electric vehicles.
Instead, they want to see organisations that established a baseline, set targets, and implemented a broader emissions reduction strategy.
This could include reducing fleet size, improving utilisation, reducing idling, introducing route optimisation, implementing driver behaviour programs, right-sizing vehicles, or transitioning to lower-emission powertrains.
The strongest submissions will include measurable outcomes and evidence of a long-term sustainability plan.
Fleet Technology Award
The Fleet Technology Award focuses on technology solutions that deliver clear operational outcomes.
Judges will be looking for practical examples where technology solved a problem, improved efficiency, reduced costs, enhanced safety, or improved customer service.
Importantly, the technology solution must have been operational long enough to demonstrate measurable results.
The judging panel wants to see evidence, data, and outcomes — not simply the implementation of new technology.
This category could include telematics, AI tools, maintenance systems, booking platforms, data analytics, camera systems, or other fleet-related technologies.
Fleet Supplier of the Year
The Fleet Supplier of the Year Award will be heavily influenced by feedback from customers and industry peers.
Rather than relying solely on written submissions, this category allows the fleet community to recognise suppliers that consistently deliver strong service, support, innovation, and customer outcomes.
Judges will still review supplier nominations, but the category is designed to reflect real customer experiences and industry reputation.
The panel will be looking for suppliers that demonstrate strong partnerships with customers and a genuine understanding of fleet industry challenges.
More Than Just an Awards Submission
Fleet News Group says one of the key themes across all categories is authenticity.
The judges are looking for real stories, measurable improvements, and practical leadership.
Organisations do not need to be perfect, and they do not need massive budgets to be competitive.
What matters most is demonstrating a clear understanding of the challenge, the actions taken, and the outcomes achieved.
With nominations closing on 30 June 2026, organisations are being encouraged to focus on evidence, outcomes, and lessons learned when preparing submissions.
The finalists in each category will be announced in August 2026 before industry voting begins.
