Smart is expanding its Australian electric vehicle range with the launch of the all-new smart #5, a mid-size SUV offering up to 590km of WLTP driving range and 800-volt charging technology.
The smart #5 is the brand’s new flagship and represents a significant move beyond the compact city cars traditionally associated with the smart name. Its larger cabin, long driving range and rapid charging capability make it relevant to novated lease customers, executive fleets and organisations seeking a premium electric SUV.
Built on an 800-volt electrical architecture, the #5 features a 100kWh battery with 4C charging capability. Smart says the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in less than 18 minutes when connected to a suitable DC fast charger.
For fleet operators, the combination of a maximum 590km WLTP range and short charging stops gives the #5 the potential to handle regional travel as well as daily metropolitan duties. Actual range and charging performance will depend on the selected variant, driving conditions and available charging infrastructure.
Vehicle-to-load functionality adds another layer of practicality by allowing the battery to power external electrical equipment. This could be useful for employees working away from fixed facilities or drivers using the vehicle for outdoor and recreational activities.
The smart #5 uses front double-wishbone and rear five-link suspension, supported by several driving modes designed for different road and operating conditions.
At the top of the range, the smart #5 BRABUS uses an all-wheel-drive powertrain and can accelerate from zero to 100km/h in a claimed 3.8 seconds.
The upright exterior is styled by the Mercedes-Benz global design team, with the vehicle’s wheels-at-the-corners layout designed to create more usable interior space. Smart claims an 85 per cent cabin space utilisation rate, supported by folding seats and an expandable luggage compartment.
Inside, the #5 features a multiple-screen interface powered by an AMD V2000 processor. Available equipment includes leather upholstery, a Sennheiser audio system and a 256-colour ambient lighting system.
Driver assistance is provided through the smart Pilot Assist system, while the vehicle’s safety credentials are supported by its recognition as Euro NCAP’s Best in Class Large SUV for 2025.
The #5 introduces a broader and more practical vehicle into smart’s Australian line-up at a time when fleet and novated lease customers have an increasingly competitive selection of electric SUVs.
Pricing starts at $58,900 before on-road costs for the Pro+, with the Premium+ listed at $63,900 and the performance-focused BRABUS at $73,900.
Australian retail deliveries are scheduled to begin in November through smart’s local dealer partner, LSH Auto Australia. The initial showroom network includes locations in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
